What Is a Glow In The Dark Tattoo?
Glow in the dark tattoos are, simply put, tattoos that are applied using a special ink that can only be seen in the dark.
Glow in the dark tattoos are becoming increasingly more popular among all kinds of crowds. This is especially true in the case of professionals who do not want a traditional tattoo being visible to everyone. Many professions frown upon visible tattoos. These people want the excitement of having the tattoo visible only when the lights are out, such as in a club or in a more intimate setting.
Adding to the increasing popularity of these tattoos are the number of celebrities that are getting them done. Lil Wayne, Khloe Kardashian, and Lindsay Lohan all boast them.
How Do They Do It?
Glow in the dark tattoos are not done with traditional tattoo ink. Tattoo ink generally consists of a metallic pigment suspended in some sort of hypoallergenic carrier solution. Although most are metallic pigments, some are even plastic- or vegetable-based.
When inking a glow in the dark tattoo, artists inject special solutions containing phosphorus into the skin to produce the glow in the dark tattoo effect. The phosphorus ink causes the tattoo to remain invisible in normal light, but in the dark, the tattoo glows in fine detail. Glow in the dark tattoos can either be inked entirely out of the phosphorus solution to provide an invisible effect, or the phosphorus solution can be injected either around or inside an existing traditional tattoo for an extra special effect. Not every tattoo artist will ink glow in the dark tattoos, however.
Some have safety concerns about the phosphorus itself, and still others are put off by the cost of materials and do not feel that the amount of profit is worth the time to create this tattoo type.
